Detective Comics Scores First #1?
Numbers guru John Jackson Miller has written up his piece on April’s comics sales, and one thing he notes that’s hugely amusing is that this may be the first time in the history of comics sales that Detective Comics held the #1 position. This is remarkable from a few angles. One is that Detective Comics never accidentally ended up #1 at some point over the years, another is that of the two caped-crusader main titles Batman seems to have been the home of most of the obvious contenders for #1 in the character’s history, but most of all it’s just fascinating to have a comic that dang old hit #1 on the charts. It’s sort of like Mickey Rooney punching to the top of the film box office numbers.
Miller also notes that after running a comparison between 2009 and 1994 — before Marvel split off and therefore a time when there were a metric ton of comics coming out under the full-steam-ahead engine created in the late 1980s and geared up in the early 1990s, the market wasn’t any more or less top-heavy than it is now. Not to any reasonable extent. According to Miller, the top 61 books accounted for half of all unit sales within the Top 300 comics list in 1994; the top 58 books accounted for half of all unit sales within the Top 300 comics list now.

Justice League Unlimited - Season Two (DC Comics Classic Collection)
In the final 13 episodes of Justice League Unlimited, Grodd recruits Lex Luthor, Sinestro, Bizarro, Giganta, and hordes of other villains to form the Legion of Doom, leading to numerous action-packed episodes of villains fighting the superheroes of the expanded JLU. The core members of the original series–Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Flash, and Green Lantern–are supplemented by such heroes as Green Arrow, Black Canary, Supergirl, Red Tornado, and Mister Terrific. But even waves of super-beings would be a bore if the stories weren’t compelling and well-thought-out, and dashed with humor. It’s the respect for the viewer’s intelligence that elevates JLU beyond a kids’ series to arguably the best animated-superhero show ever.
During the season, Hawkgirl meets Katar Hol, Hawkman, who claims that he and Hawkgirl are the resurrection of centuries-ago lovers, which throws a wrench into her developing relationship with Green Lantern (”Shadow of the Hawk,” “Ancient History”). Flash fights a rogue’s gallery of his arch enemies alongside Batman and Orion (”Flash and Substance”), Luthor switches brains with the Flash in “The Great Brain Robbery” (inside joke: Michael Rosenbaum is the voice of Flash, but plays Lex Luthor in the series Smallville) , and Luthor’s and Grodd’s struggle for dominance of the Legion of Doom comes to a head in the final two-parter, which leads to an unlikely partnership against the ultimate supervillain. The series also dips into other characters and realms of DC comic-book lore, such as the Legion of Super-Heroes (”Far from Home”), Deadman (”Dead Reckoning”), the Seven Soldiers of Victory (”Patriot Act”), Birds of Prey (”Grudge Match”), and Mike Grell’s Warlord (”Chaos at the Earth’s Core”). In the bonus features, the series creators discuss JLU’s ongoing Cadmus story line, there’s a music-only track of the series’ final episode, and the creators do a 30-minute on-screen commentary talking about three late-season episodes. –David Horiuchi

Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker (The Original Uncut Version)
Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early ’90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protg’s activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the “tortured hero” mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported “kids’ show” has dared to attempt. (Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.) Once again, Warner Brothers’ cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. –Bruce Reid

FAQ - Which Tintin Album Will Be the First Tintin Movie
By Holly Franklin
The Tintin movie to be released in 2009 and to be directed by either Peter Jackson or Steven Spielberg will prove to be a big draw at the box office. The buzz around the Tintin movie is already huge with several Tintin forums red hot with discussion
I have already gone into the explanation about why this Tintin movie trilogy has been so popular before. Tintin is an everyman whose character is something that we can all relate to. His innate sense to do well and find the truth is something that we all relate to from our childhood. Tintin is a European cartoon legend.
There have been 23 adventures written by Herge from 1929 to 1976 sadly with a 24th Tintin and the Alpha-Art incomplete when he died in 1983. Herge specified in his will that there should be no new illustrated adventures after his passing.
On May 15th on what was the week before people were to celebrate what would have been Herge 100th birthday Spielberg and Jackson announced they would be translating three existing Tintin stories to the big screen.
The big question is now which Tintin album will be the first to be turned into a Tintin movie. There has been a lot of talk and it been a closely guarded secret. The buzz has been great and the speculation huge. There are 23 Tintin adventures to choose from and so a lot of possible material to cover.
The album of choice will probably come after 1940 because this is when Herge introduced the much loved character Captain Haddock rumored to be played by Tom Hanks. It is also true that Herge was a lot less political in his stories after the second world war that ended in 1944 (He had worked under Nazi occupation in Belgium writing for a paper).
The most likely source for the Tintin movie will be from the double installment episodes from Herge middle period: the pirate/submarine yarn The Secret of the Unicorn and its sequel Red Rackham’s Treasure (1943-44); the Inca Diptych The Seven Crystal Balls and The Prisoner of the Sun (1948-9); and the post-war Destination Moon/Explorers on the Moon (1953-54) where Tintin becomes the first human on the Moon 15 years before Neil Armstrong. Tintin reaches the lunar surface on what looks suspiciously like a V-2 rocket.
The other single volume adventures would at first appear a little too slender to create into a film. It is believed that Spielberg and Jackson have yet to confirm which albums they will work on all though speculation has increased as to who will playing which Tintin role. Rupert Grint (of Harry Potter fame) has been linked to the part of the pesky Walloon reporter. There may though be a few surprises and even Gwyneth Paltrow name has been mentioned more than once.
Whatever happens and we wait with baited breath any announcement will be big news in Hollywood.
The Secret of the Unicorn is going to be very popular search topic as the Tintin movie draws near. Holly Franklin has been a big Tintin fan for a number of years. She is very much looking forward to the new Tintin movie trilogy due for release in 2009.
Spider Man Comics
&
Evil Villains
By Jeff Austin
It does not matter if we are adults or children we all love seeing action comic stories that pit good guys against bad guys with the winner being clearly addressed. One such comic that has world wide appeal is that of the amazing Spider Man comics. These comics feature Peter Parker and his wise cracking, web slinging alter ego self Spider Man.
Spider Man debuted in Marvel Comics during 1962. As he was only a guest appearance in that particular comic it was not considered that Spider Man would become a huge success in his own rights. This successful occurrence caused Marvel Comics to create a separate comic book series for Spider Man.
The various adventures of Spider Man comics began with Stan Lee and Steve Dikto. These are the people who contributed greatly towards Spider Mans popularity with the many fans. Spider Man has for the most part been shown wearing a blue and red suit. The suit has black web lines crossing over the red sections of his suit.
While this is the main costume of the Spider Man comic hero, there was a time when the storyline changed Spider Mans entire outfit to a black one. This black suited Spider Man Comic series lasted for about four years from 1984 onwards. At the end of that time the various fans of the Spider Man comics would learn of a new character to the world of Spider Man. This character was an alien Symbiote.
The Black Symbiote, Mary Jane Watson, the Green Goblin and the various other villains and heroes who have made their appearance in the Spider Man comics have all help to keep the fans interest by changing the various battles and situations that Spidey as he is also called continuously faces.
In the many different adventures of the Spider Man comics both Spider and Peter Parker are shown as down to earth individuals. This trait allows the various readers to identify to some extent with Spider Man. This is also probably why Spider Man comics are so very popular.
Other than battling evil villains the Spider Man comics also deal with various social issues that are ongoing in our society. The influence these comics have, cant be underestimated as many of the Spider Man comic fans are children.
In all of these Spider Man comics we are shown how theses social issues affect the various people who are in the storyline. As comics like Spider Man continue to grow in popularity you will get to see the various other ideas that Marvel Comics has in store for our web slinging hero the Amazing Spider Man.

How to Trade, Sell, or Buy Comics Online
By Phoenix Delray
Ever since we were introduced to Spiderman for the first time in 1938, millions of people across the globe have scrambled to buy comics from trade shows, shops, and private sellers. The books have remained popular with readers of all ages, and there are thousands or even millions that have been printed all over the world. Comic books owe much of their glory to commercialization, publicity, and the allure of imagination.
Once the first shop opened for fans to buy comics from, it didnt take long before the popularity of the thin, illustrated books spread like the flu in the middle of winter. In the beginning, these books cost enough for people that they would often really have to put forth an effort to save their money to buy one that they really wanted. These days, however, they can be found for cheap, as long as they are not yet one of the coveted collector editions. Many experts these days agree that the best avenue for finding and buying great comic books is found in the world of online shopping.
To buy comics online, youll have to first find the most reputable sellers. There are some things that you can look for to safeguard yourself against crooks like searching out customer feedback, looking to see if they are members of the Better Business Bureau, seeing if they have a secure web site, and so on. There are tons of valuable deals that are available on every kind of site from the sites of the private sellers to international auction sites.
Those websites that have established themselves as safe, prominent places for shopping are the most recommended pages to browse through. Some of the deals and discounts that sellers make available when you buy comics are things like bulk discounts, shipping discounts, and many also have email mailing lists for those avid fans who would like to receive special preferred member sale announcements and bonus buys.

Andrea Pazienza, traces Naples and beyond
By Michele De Capitani
Andrea Pazienza, who was born in San Benedetto del Tronto in 1956, was an early-talented guy, and while he was still attending the High School he realised his first comic-strip and paintings. At the beginning of the 70s his works begins to be displayed in personal and group exhibitions, and Pazienza begins to show to have a very versatile talent: he publishes his first comic-strip, in 1974 (Pentotals extraordinary adventures), but he also founds the reviews Cannibale and Frigidaire, and he works also for other reviews. He also works as a teacher, and it is from this experience that he takes inspiration for his graphic novel Pompeo.
Pazienza is also the cofounder of the Comics and Graphic Arts School Zio Feininger, but his work goes beyond comics. Pazienza, indeed, is also well-known for having realised cinema playbills (for example, the playbill for Fellinis City of Women), music videos, covers of records, advertising campaigns, theatre sceneries and playbills, succeeding in expressing his creativity and his ideas in many different fields.
The exhibition, which will take place from the 14th November to the 13th January, will celebrate the artists eclectic talent offering an overview of his works, and in particular it will be focused on the special relationship that there was between him and Naples, a city where in fact he never lived but which was particularly important for him. The exhibition is intended to gather the traces of this special relationship between the artist and the city, working them out from his drawings and tales. The section Traces of Naples will highlight this aspect of the artists career, and will also include a collection of images representing Tot, the great Italian actor that Pazienza liked to draw in some of his comic streeps.
However, the exhibition is meant to give an exhaustive overview of the artists work, and although it is particularly focused on the comic-strips and quotes which tell us something about his relationship with Naples, it does not leave out other works of this particularly prolific author, displaying more than 200 original plates, as well as sketches and illustrations, which will help visitors to discover all the stages of Pazienzas career, from the first works of the 70s to the more mature works of the 80s. Visitors will have the possibility to admire the satiric comic-strips that he realised for international reviews (in the section Antology), or to stop to watch the drawings of animals and fairy tales realised by him for one of his friends children. Also the works that he realised with his wife Marina Comandino will be displayed, as well as the plates of his most famous graphic novels.
The work, but also the personality of the author, will be even more investigated displaying personal objects, audiovisual aids and pictures, and also thanks to a great number of events like screenings, meetings with artists and books presentations.
Pazienzas works exhibition in Naples makes the city even more attractive for all those who love all forms of art expression. Book a cheap hotel in Naples and immerse yourselves in art.

Do You Know The History Behind DC Comics?
By MIKE SELVON
The “Golden Age of comic books” is said to be the 1930s and 1940s. As the world faced the Great Depression and world wars, the American public needed more than just political satire or “Little Orphan Annie” cartoons; they needed a hero.
DC Comics had been around since the 1920s but saw little success, since no one wanted to take a gamble on a comic book series featuring unknown artists and characters. However, the launch of the “Superman” superhero in a 1938 issue of “Action Comics” began a new area of comics graphic novels; one where superheroes captivated audiences with their enviable superpowers.
Public fascination with the superheroes of DC Comics came and went throughout the 1940s and 1950s. In mid-1955, the Silver Age of comics was born, characterized by a revamping of old characters that were somewhat more “human,” and an amalgamation of different universes into battles royal.
The Justice League of America would bring together Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and other characters for the first time. It’s said that this era inspired Marvel Comic Books’ Stan Lee to create more “human” characters and combine superheroes in the Fantastic Four series.
After “the Silver Age of comic books” of the 1950s and 1960s came “the Bronze Age” of the 1970s and 1980s. The Silver Age had introduced characters who were more “human” and less stereotypical do-gooders.
They, like humans, hosted a range of emotions, interacted with other humans and struggled with complex psyches. During the “Bronze Age,” darker and previously-off-limits themes of drug abuse, personal vices, inner conflict and anti-hero character development entered the comic realm.
Kids were no longer the only readers, so the business savvy comic book creator had to address more serious themes of society, personality defects and science. The 1980s began what is known as “the Modern Age of comic books,” which persists today. This “Modern Age” builds off the Bronze Age but delves even further into the darker side of graphic novels, intertwining sex, drugs, vices, psychological struggles, imperfect anti-heroes, cynicism and social critique.
During this time, the DC Comics Batman’s The Dark Knight series takes off, X-Men launches into the complex back histories of their characters and the Mutants went to war against the humans, and a number of apocalyptic comics graphic novels came out, threatening the end of the world.
Perhaps what makes DC Comics so enduring is the ability of their writers to adapt to changing demands in their market. They recognize the need to change costumes, to make characters more tangible, to incorporate modern themes into their graphic novels and to give the public an occasional imperfect superhero.
Given the pervading cynicism of the 1980s and 1990s, it’s hard to imagine a do-gooder like Superman dominating with his humdrum perfection. Instead, a psychologically driven Batman captivates modern audiences, with his childhood fear of bats, the pain of his parents’ murder, his utility belt weakness, his unfulfilled love life and his relentless quest for vigilante justice.
Audiences wanted bigger and better, so creators teamed up superheroes and pitted their characters against Marvel Comics characters too. Today, comic books aren’t just for kids with an extra quarter in their pockets: they are for anyone who needs a hero to get through their day.

Why Selling Comics Can Be Tough in This Economy
By Joseph Gardener
At any point in time where people will be watching their finances very strictly, it can be very difficult to be someone who is trying to sell items some would view as not essential for basic daily survival such as comic books. With the economy having problems and prices for food and other items becoming higher, it gets harder many people to survive and some comic book collectors or fans may even need to go to their last resort which is selling their comic books.
However, how do you get people to buy comic book when they too are trying so hard to limit their spending while still trying to get a fair price? This can be very sad because a person may even lower their prices out of desperation but there are some things that person needs to know before they do this or go to that extent.
One of the things that a person needs to know is that entertainment is always needed and comic books count as entertainment. This may not seem like an important fact but in all reality it is. When you are selling your comic books during a time like this knowing your facts can make all of the difference in how to get the correct amount that your comic deserves.
People always need an escape or a way to get away from everything that is happening in the world around them and for many people who where a part of World War II even when they may not have had much money comic books may have been their escape which helped them to see hope or see reasons to try and make a difference just like some of the comic book heroes that are featured in comic books you may find today.
Comic book prices may change and you may even find many store owners who are looking to say that your comic books are not worth as much as they are but you need to keep in mind that there are other people in the world who would love to own your comic books and all you need to do is be able to find them.
One great way to be able to find these people is to use EBay or other online selling systems where you are selling person to person. In addition, when you use this website or other websites that are similar to them then you are able to set a buyout price but you are also able to have people bid on your items which might mean you could make more money then you thought you might.
There are many things that may stand in the way of being able to sell your comics during economic problems but you also need to keep in mind that they have a worth and that worth is something that is always going to matter to one person or another.
