I guess we all have our definition of the character we like the most, and for me it has been tough to beat Donner?s Superman, the Alan Moore stories and Byrne?s Man of Steel, but this one did it.

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes (Calvin

    Hobbes)

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes (Calvin & Hobbes)
An Excerpt from Bill Watterson’s Introduction:

“I’ve loved comic strips as long as I can remember. As a kid, I knew I wanted to be either a cartoonist or an astronaut. The latter was never much of a possibility, as I don’t even like riding in elevators. I kept my options open until seventh grade, but when I stopped understanding math and science, my choice was made. There is great personal satisfaction in attending to detail and quality, and I remain very proud of the standards the strip met day after day. I also liked the responsibility of knowing that, succeed or fail, it was all my own doing. This approach kept the strip very honest and personal–everything having to do with Calvin and Hobbes expressed my own ideas, my own values, my own way. I wrote every word, drew every line, and painted every color. It’s a rare gift to find such fulfilling work and I tried to show my appreciation by giving the strip everything I had to offer.”

Spider Man Comics
&
Evil Villains

By Jeff Austin

It does not matter if we are adults or children we all love seeing action comic stories that pit good guys against bad guys with the winner being clearly addressed. One such comic that has world wide appeal is that of the amazing Spider Man comics. These comics feature Peter Parker and his wise cracking, web slinging alter ego self Spider Man.

Spider Man debuted in Marvel Comics during 1962. As he was only a guest appearance in that particular comic it was not considered that Spider Man would become a huge success in his own rights. This successful occurrence caused Marvel Comics to create a separate comic book series for Spider Man.

The various adventures of Spider Man comics began with Stan Lee and Steve Dikto. These are the people who contributed greatly towards Spider Mans popularity with the many fans. Spider Man has for the most part been shown wearing a blue and red suit. The suit has black web lines crossing over the red sections of his suit.

While this is the main costume of the Spider Man comic hero, there was a time when the storyline changed Spider Mans entire outfit to a black one. This black suited Spider Man Comic series lasted for about four years from 1984 onwards. At the end of that time the various fans of the Spider Man comics would learn of a new character to the world of Spider Man. This character was an alien Symbiote.

The Black Symbiote, Mary Jane Watson, the Green Goblin and the various other villains and heroes who have made their appearance in the Spider Man comics have all help to keep the fans interest by changing the various battles and situations that Spidey as he is also called continuously faces.

In the many different adventures of the Spider Man comics both Spider and Peter Parker are shown as down to earth individuals. This trait allows the various readers to identify to some extent with Spider Man. This is also probably why Spider Man comics are so very popular.

Other than battling evil villains the Spider Man comics also deal with various social issues that are ongoing in our society. The influence these comics have, cant be underestimated as many of the Spider Man comic fans are children.

In all of these Spider Man comics we are shown how theses social issues affect the various people who are in the storyline. As comics like Spider Man continue to grow in popularity you will get to see the various other ideas that Marvel Comics has in store for our web slinging hero the Amazing Spider Man.

Do You Know The History Behind DC Comics?

By MIKE SELVON

The “Golden Age of comic books” is said to be the 1930s and 1940s. As the world faced the Great Depression and world wars, the American public needed more than just political satire or “Little Orphan Annie” cartoons; they needed a hero.

DC Comics had been around since the 1920s but saw little success, since no one wanted to take a gamble on a comic book series featuring unknown artists and characters. However, the launch of the “Superman” superhero in a 1938 issue of “Action Comics” began a new area of comics graphic novels; one where superheroes captivated audiences with their enviable superpowers.

Public fascination with the superheroes of DC Comics came and went throughout the 1940s and 1950s. In mid-1955, the Silver Age of comics was born, characterized by a revamping of old characters that were somewhat more “human,” and an amalgamation of different universes into battles royal.

The Justice League of America would bring together Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and other characters for the first time. It’s said that this era inspired Marvel Comic Books’ Stan Lee to create more “human” characters and combine superheroes in the Fantastic Four series.

After “the Silver Age of comic books” of the 1950s and 1960s came “the Bronze Age” of the 1970s and 1980s. The Silver Age had introduced characters who were more “human” and less stereotypical do-gooders.

They, like humans, hosted a range of emotions, interacted with other humans and struggled with complex psyches. During the “Bronze Age,” darker and previously-off-limits themes of drug abuse, personal vices, inner conflict and anti-hero character development entered the comic realm.

Kids were no longer the only readers, so the business savvy comic book creator had to address more serious themes of society, personality defects and science. The 1980s began what is known as “the Modern Age of comic books,” which persists today. This “Modern Age” builds off the Bronze Age but delves even further into the darker side of graphic novels, intertwining sex, drugs, vices, psychological struggles, imperfect anti-heroes, cynicism and social critique.

During this time, the DC Comics Batman’s The Dark Knight series takes off, X-Men launches into the complex back histories of their characters and the Mutants went to war against the humans, and a number of apocalyptic comics graphic novels came out, threatening the end of the world.

Perhaps what makes DC Comics so enduring is the ability of their writers to adapt to changing demands in their market. They recognize the need to change costumes, to make characters more tangible, to incorporate modern themes into their graphic novels and to give the public an occasional imperfect superhero.

Given the pervading cynicism of the 1980s and 1990s, it’s hard to imagine a do-gooder like Superman dominating with his humdrum perfection. Instead, a psychologically driven Batman captivates modern audiences, with his childhood fear of bats, the pain of his parents’ murder, his utility belt weakness, his unfulfilled love life and his relentless quest for vigilante justice.

Audiences wanted bigger and better, so creators teamed up superheroes and pitted their characters against Marvel Comics characters too. Today, comic books aren’t just for kids with an extra quarter in their pockets: they are for anyone who needs a hero to get through their day.

A free gift awaits you at our portal site, where you can enrich your knowledge further about the dc comics. Your comment is much appreciated at our how to draw comics blog.

Catch Me If You Can

Catch Me If You Can
Steven Spielberg veered from the futuristic sci-fi flirtations of A.I. and Minority Report with this brisk, stylish period take on the career of teen con-man extraordinaire Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his dogged G-man pursuer/de facto extended family member Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks). As always, the director’s musical collaborator is John Williams, and the scoring legend uses the occasion of their 20th collaboration as a rewarding musical journey back to the days when he was known as Johnny Williams, ambitious young pianist for Henry Mancini on such early jazz scores as Peter Gunn. Informed by a half-century of subsequent achievement, Williams’s return to the jazz idiom of his youth yields a smart, nervous score that evokes more than mere nostalgia. But with Dan Higgins’s moody sax often leading the way, the veteran composer’s work here seems more evocative reinvention than revisitation, yet another tribute to his uncanny ability to make any idiom his own. A handful of pop standards (including Sinatra’s “Come Fly with Me,” Getz and Gilberto’s “Girl from Ipanema,” “The Christmas Song” by Nat “King” Cole) deftly color both period and plot, but, as always, it’s Williams who provides Spielberg’s masterful imagery with its musical life’s blood. –Jerry McCulley

FAQ - Which Tintin Album Will Be the First Tintin Movie

By Holly Franklin

The Tintin movie to be released in 2009 and to be directed by either Peter Jackson or Steven Spielberg will prove to be a big draw at the box office. The buzz around the Tintin movie is already huge with several Tintin forums red hot with discussion

I have already gone into the explanation about why this Tintin movie trilogy has been so popular before. Tintin is an everyman whose character is something that we can all relate to. His innate sense to do well and find the truth is something that we all relate to from our childhood. Tintin is a European cartoon legend.

There have been 23 adventures written by Herge from 1929 to 1976 sadly with a 24th Tintin and the Alpha-Art incomplete when he died in 1983. Herge specified in his will that there should be no new illustrated adventures after his passing.

On May 15th on what was the week before people were to celebrate what would have been Herge 100th birthday Spielberg and Jackson announced they would be translating three existing Tintin stories to the big screen.

The big question is now which Tintin album will be the first to be turned into a Tintin movie. There has been a lot of talk and it been a closely guarded secret. The buzz has been great and the speculation huge. There are 23 Tintin adventures to choose from and so a lot of possible material to cover.

The album of choice will probably come after 1940 because this is when Herge introduced the much loved character Captain Haddock rumored to be played by Tom Hanks. It is also true that Herge was a lot less political in his stories after the second world war that ended in 1944 (He had worked under Nazi occupation in Belgium writing for a paper).

The most likely source for the Tintin movie will be from the double installment episodes from Herge middle period: the pirate/submarine yarn The Secret of the Unicorn and its sequel Red Rackham’s Treasure (1943-44); the Inca Diptych The Seven Crystal Balls and The Prisoner of the Sun (1948-9); and the post-war Destination Moon/Explorers on the Moon (1953-54) where Tintin becomes the first human on the Moon 15 years before Neil Armstrong. Tintin reaches the lunar surface on what looks suspiciously like a V-2 rocket.

The other single volume adventures would at first appear a little too slender to create into a film. It is believed that Spielberg and Jackson have yet to confirm which albums they will work on all though speculation has increased as to who will playing which Tintin role. Rupert Grint (of Harry Potter fame) has been linked to the part of the pesky Walloon reporter. There may though be a few surprises and even Gwyneth Paltrow name has been mentioned more than once.

Whatever happens and we wait with baited breath any announcement will be big news in Hollywood.

The Secret of the Unicorn is going to be very popular search topic as the Tintin movie draws near. Holly Franklin has been a big Tintin fan for a number of years. She is very much looking forward to the new Tintin movie trilogy due for release in 2009.

How to Trade, Sell, or Buy Comics Online

By Phoenix Delray

Ever since we were introduced to Spiderman for the first time in 1938, millions of people across the globe have scrambled to buy comics from trade shows, shops, and private sellers. The books have remained popular with readers of all ages, and there are thousands or even millions that have been printed all over the world. Comic books owe much of their glory to commercialization, publicity, and the allure of imagination.

Once the first shop opened for fans to buy comics from, it didnt take long before the popularity of the thin, illustrated books spread like the flu in the middle of winter. In the beginning, these books cost enough for people that they would often really have to put forth an effort to save their money to buy one that they really wanted. These days, however, they can be found for cheap, as long as they are not yet one of the coveted collector editions. Many experts these days agree that the best avenue for finding and buying great comic books is found in the world of online shopping.

To buy comics online, youll have to first find the most reputable sellers. There are some things that you can look for to safeguard yourself against crooks like searching out customer feedback, looking to see if they are members of the Better Business Bureau, seeing if they have a secure web site, and so on. There are tons of valuable deals that are available on every kind of site from the sites of the private sellers to international auction sites.

Those websites that have established themselves as safe, prominent places for shopping are the most recommended pages to browse through. Some of the deals and discounts that sellers make available when you buy comics are things like bulk discounts, shipping discounts, and many also have email mailing lists for those avid fans who would like to receive special preferred member sale announcements and bonus buys.

The heroes and heroines that are found in the books continue to fill imaginations from young to old, and although there are many new characters that are born into the comic book world, there are the everlasting, infamous, and invincible ones that will seemingly continue on forever. As stated before, Spider Man is more popular than ever, which is amazing considering that he is now at least 71 years old! If you are thinking of investing in the world of these magazines and books, they are as close as your fingertips online, which makes it easier than ever to find and buy comics of all kinds at all price ranges.

How Comic Books Can Be a Great Way to Add to Your Income

By Joseph Gardener

Through much of the last century, comic books were very popular and individuals of all ages collected them. Eventually, comics were attributed a monetary value and the value of each edition began to be reviewed for possible reselling. For individuals who had collected many comic books, but did not have the full collection, this posed an excellent opportunity for them to complete their collections. For individuals who had certain editions and wished to sell them, this meant a great opportunity to increase their income by selling the comic books they had.

Today, selling and buying comic books happens thousands of times every day and is a very lucrative enterprise. Comic books are a great way to add to your income, especially as the economy is not doing well currently. Comic books are a form of entertainment that many individuals enjoy losing themselves in for a time. Due to this, comic books will continue to be bought and read no matter how hard the economy becomes. This is excellent news for potential sellers, and will help you add to your personal income if you so choose.

Comic books are a limited resource, which means they are printed only so many times. With many comic books being damaged by children or lost for one reason or another, the editions in good condition are highly sought after. For the collectors who have managed to secure rare editions, this can be a wonderful source of extra income if they wish to sell these editions. The rarer the comic, the more the comic is worth.

If you find yourself out of work and have a decent sized comic book collection, you may have an opportunity to earn some side income by selling some of your comic books. While the economy may not be doing well, the value of many comics is continuing to grow and while there may be fewer buyers than usual, there will always be individuals out there who yearn to own rare editions of popular comics like SpiderMan, XMen, Batman or Wolverine. This places you in an excellent position, especially if you are currently having financial trouble. You may up enjoying it so much you decide to go into selling and buying comic books full time.

Comic books and similar items will always be a great way to add to the revenue a person earns as it is a highly sought after item that many individuals would gladly pay for to possess. Whether the buyer is someone who wants to add it to his or her collection, or merely wants to have it to read the edition they never were able to, selling comic books is an excellent option for individuals. No matter which comic book you will want to sell, chances are that there is a seller out there somewhere who yearns to own it. In the process, you will be able to add to your income and secure yourself a stable financial income.

Anime Comics Has Increased In Popularity In America

By MIKE SELVON

Gen-X’ers and older Gen-Y’s grew up in the 1980s, when comic book series cartoons like “The X-Men,” “Justice League,” “Captain America,” “Teen Titans,” “Spider-Man,” “Batman,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “The Transformers.” As these kids aged, they became adults in their 20s and 30s, creating comic book movie blockbusters to keep the legacy going.

The next generation of younger Gen-Y’s would look to Japan and China for their comic book series. They grew up with “Dragonball Z,” “Pokemon” and “Sailor Moon.” Anime comics came to America with surprising fervor and it’s not likely to dissipate anytime soon.

The DC and Marvel Comic fans sometimes view anime fans as the ultimate nerds, the plot lines as “cheesy” and the characters as “daft” or “annoying.” Older Americans often scratch their heads and ask, “Why are anime comics so popular among today’s youth?”

Some could argue it was a massive advertising campaign that came over from Japan, who saw America and Europe as large, untapped markets. The challenge was to rework their material into exportable goods with English sub-titles and over-dubs.

They farmed enthusiasm with several different products, with movies like “Ghost in the Shell” or “Akira” and cartoon series like “Dragonball Z,” “Pokemon” and “Sailor Moon.” The basic business model was to keep costs low, try a little of everything and see what works.

Once their endeavors showed great success, the merchandise, the manga comics and the graphic novels made their way over as well. It was the basic economic edict of supply and demand. Give the fans what they want in every capacity, such as with figurines, costumes, backpacks, t-shirts, manga comics, DVDs, downloads and comic book series.

Moreover, the messages in anime comics reach today’s youth at a level that traditional DC or Marvel comic books missed. Anime focuses more on emotions, relationship struggles, introspection, adventurous personal quests and the hero’s journey; all in surreal, magical surroundings.

Unlike cartoons for kids, anime characters will die and complex relationships are formed. Nothing is off-limits in the anime world, not even sex or violence. People are confronted with deep concepts and provoked to think about the meaning of life.

In a way, it’s the softer, psychological side of Marvel, blended with the magical, omniscient qualities of a DC superhero: the best of both worlds. For the male fans, some manga comics are adapted to show sexier heroines — some in their coy school girl uniforms, others with more Westernized curves and futuristic apparel. Yet for the female fans, plots center on soap opera type stories of love, longing and character development. In fact, women make up half the attendees at the anime comics conventions.

Some of the most-viewed anime comics today include Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Bleach, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Naruto, Death Note, FLCL, Princess Mononoke (movie), Trigun, Inyuasha and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The most critically acclaimed anime film of 2007 was “Paprika,” where researchers developed a device that allowed them to go inside people’s dreams for psychotherapeutic treatment purposes.

Often the subject matter of anime graphic novels and series looks at science-fiction type materials or include evolved species, monsters and zombies in their series. The adult topics of sex and violence mature and grow with viewers, keeping them life-long fans.

300

300
An emperor amasses an army of hundreds of thousands, drawn from two continents, to invade a third continent and conquer a tiny, divided nation. Only a few hundred warriors stand against them. Yet the tiny nation is saved. It sounds like the plot of a preposterous fantasy novel. It is historical fact. In 481-480 B.C., King Xerxes of Persia raised forces in Asia and Africa and invaded Greece with an army so huge that it “drank rivers dry.” Then they entered the mountain pass of Thermopylae and encountered 300 determined soldiers from Sparta….

Writer-artist Frank Miller and colorist Lynn Varley retell the battle of Thermopylae in the exciting and moving graphic novel 300. They focus on King Leonidas, the young foot soldier Stelios, and the storyteller Dilios to highlight the Spartans’ awe-inspiring toughness and valor. Miller and Varley’s art is terrific, as always; the combat scenes are especially powerful. And Miller’s writing is his best in years. Read it.

Do not, however, read 300 expecting a strictly accurate history. The Phocians did not “scatter,” as Miller describes. His Spartans are mildly homophobic, which is goofy in such a gay society. Miller doesn’t say how many Greeks remained for the climactic battle–you’d think 300 Spartans and maybe a dozen others, when there were between 700 and 1,100 Greeks. Herodotus’s Histories does not identify the traitor Ephialtes as ugly and hunchbacked, or even as Spartan. 300 establishes a believable connection between Ephialtes’s affliction and behavior, but his monstrous appearance, King Xerxes’s effeminacy, and the Persians’ inexplicable pierced-GenX-African looks make for an eyebrow-raising choice of villain imagery. Nonetheless, 300 is a brilliant dramatization.

For the full story of the failed invasion, read Herodotus’s Histories or, for a concise, graphic-novel retelling, Larry Gonick’s great Cartoon History of the Universe: Volumes 1-7, From the Big Bang to Alexander the Great. For a lighthearted look at post-invasion Athens and a very young Alexander the Great, check out William Messner-Loebs and Sam Kieth’s witty and gorgeous graphic novels, Epicurus the Sage Vol. I and Vol. II. –Cynthia Ward

that is more of a misunderstanding than a myth. In best cases it’s expedient to add a note of breakdown to your credit wire. And to an extent it is true. Stay reject from payday lends onward, unless you see that you can shuffle off better partition of the levies and can payoff the advance right away. Rather, you be poor a guide that helps you to become versed how to write your own letter to creditors, scrapbook agencies and credit bureaus. The creditors would opt for that you give them a signal and whip out payment arrangements. Rather than compliant messes weigh you down, take turmoil now and acquisition solutions that will reduce your tension and your debts.

If you have access to the scoop highway, find the machines to jewel relevant pages that teacher you into incumbrance relief. However, credit reports still consist of details of your financial associates (for for instance, citizens that you share a joint invoice or bank annual with).

that info is used by lenders to inquiry out the creditworthiness of your financial partners. Pay off one liability at a date, amid by installments you treasure trove relief.

To evade incurring new indebtedness, stay away from credit bet. You can secure phone calls to creditors before you moniker improvise to the album agencies. that will reduce the size of your monthly responsibility repayments, leaving you more greenback to pay of your debts in a shorter period of ticks.

But plentiful inhabitants don’t fully understand how the credit rating totality operates. And that applies parallel if your financial history has improved greatly bygone recent dotage.

As a general rule, missed floater repayments will bunk on your credit detail for six second childhood. The stressor can eight break you or compose you take animation to resolve the problem. In uttermost instances, creditors will write your score off, weaken your arrears, and afford you to secure inconsequential payments toward getting out of invoice.

Miscellany agencies do not demand you to have that, rather the agencies put forward to in little juncture, come close to giving you little opportunity, considering they are compensated for their efforts. For the largest item, you can alarm your creditors and forge pay-off embodiment. The cost of living alone is so demanding that dues mounts, mounts, mounts, and breaks us with each heaping rise. Lender will as well used otherwise criteria for determining your eligibility for unalike types of bad news, for excuse, mortgages, personal loans, supply cards and credit cards. So if you’ve defaulted on various debts and had court judgements entered against your place alias, your credit record will be poor and better lenders will departure you away. In general, one lad can only have one credit history (unless you take up the credit rating that a chap’s line can have, but let’s not complicate attributes), but it can be interpreted in a range of methods by deviating lenders depending upon your circumstances at the space.

For a parent evermore lender has their own credit score formula that they use to interpret the details in your credit tale. Stay away from companies that pitch to get you out of arrears for a long monthly fee. Their findings were regularly taken into take when deciding whether to accept a time payment application.

In countless countries, that usage has now ended. The creditors are commonly glad to attend from you. If you owe lucre, your credit rating is unusually heavy due to it can attempt a way for you to get out of capital. Once all computations are compassed, the debtor can move to eliminate debts owed.

To eliminate credit, you do not desire a lawyer as highest community feel they do. And the emblem of credit myths that exist sire it parallel harder to apperceive what does and does not relate your credit rating. Rather than have the scavenger hunt from wretchedness hunt you down, the creditors you could rather keep you as a friend, since they call for you to pay your receipt and incur future capital with their assembly.

You go through points of no return to finding your way out of credit, so takes some bit to grind elimination procedures to become debenture handout ride. If you did not incur the responsibility, contact the credit bureaus in chirography, which an hearing will activate. Dispute any inaccuracies. that will allow you to dream up imaginable lenders aware of the circumstances surrounding your previous credit disputeds stop. For symbol, if you missed a couple of claim repayments due to illness or redundancy, myriad lenders will take that into annual when assessing a debit application.

Apart from that, the cool way to improve your credit record is to pay off any old debts and advance to serviceability your accepted debts making each monthly repayment in full and on season.

Credit Myth 6: One soul Can Only Have One Credit Rating

that rather subtle credit myth is perfectly understandable. So while a couple of missed claim repayments may dent your credit score with uttermost debit lenders, it may not have such a dramatic effect on your application for a supply card. What greater masses do not realize, is that creditors would rather trial with you than submit your rundown to collection agencies or to the ten credit bureaus. The aim of a credit write-up is to add lenders with a detailed picture of your financial history over recent oldness. In fact, better collection agencies will fracture the law, all in the label of the Almighty Gamin.

You have recourses sporadically it be accessibles to tab. Rather, the bureaus be demanded prove that you incurred the arrears back anyone can invitation you on the phone, write you, or subscription you.

You have alternatives not repeatedly it emergency to relieving due. Breaking down botherations is the first step you will occasion to take to jewel a way out of debenture. You get the minim. If you cannot treasure trove new ideas to remedy you satisfying buy means out of invoice, explore your district enlightenment technique and query for incumbrance solutions and controllers that walk you through take partition in permission out of chit.

Exercise multifold resources can remedy you to pull up new ideas that bulge to solving worriments. Of plan these limits will vary from country to country, but as a general rule, the worst your financial history, the longer it will take to escape from the effects of it.

However, surfaced if your credit record is poor, there are various steps that you can take to improve the situation. dead horse elimination is not an option, since when you get rid of one deficit someone else exert follow the xerox patterns of the human mind. Use your credit cards to pay demanding bills culmination your credit card as soon as duck soup to pause, upraised interest progressions. audit that the tidings is mod and proper. And if they have a poor credit record it may harm your chances of vitality granted a trust despite the description of your credit record.

If you necessity to lay low any implied boxs, rein the index of financial associates on your own credit record. Get a tally management plans that helps you reduce manifest rather than costing you green to slowly basket case baggage.

dead horse is a four-letter word that puts us on parole for the rest of our lives. After the inquiry undertakes, the collection agencies cannot contact you. They do not care that you are overwhelmingly taut from their enormous phone calls, letters, etc. In the former, lenders routinely audited the credit reports of another issue living at your address.

Flipped!: David Welsh On Hiroki Endo

s Eden: It

s An Endless World

By David P. Welsh

When The New York Times debuted its weekly Graphic Books Best Seller Lists in its ArtsBeat blog, there was some surprise that two Dark Horse titles — MPD Psycho and Eden: It’s an Endless World — were floating in the sea of Naruto volumes. I guess it was kind of like going to a petting zoo and seeing a honey badger among the ducklings and piglets.

Since the Times lists reflect a mix of retail outlet types (chain bookstores, comic shops, independent booksellers, online venues, and others) and statistically weight the smaller shops, the presence of more hardcore work didn’t especially surprise me. You may not be able to reliably find Dark Horse’s seinen titles on the shelves at a Barnes & Noble, but they’ve always done very well in comic shops.

With its weekly schedule, I hope the Times’ tally highlights more oddities like Eden and, to a lesser extent, MPD Psycho, if only to remind everyone that the manga demographic isn’t entirely homogenous. The subsequent lists have made it look that way, but we’re in the middle of another massive Naruto roll-out from Viz, so space seems to be at a bit of a premium.

If I was going to recommend one of the two Dark Horse books, it would definitely be Hiroki Endo’s Eden. Eiji Otsuka, the author of MPD Psycho, also writes the darkly funny, far superior Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service (also from Dark Horse), and I’ll pimp the latter until I drop, but I’ve found that MPD turned into a chore over the three volumes I’ve read. It’s about a detective with multiple personalities, a host of serial killers, and an emerging, impenetrable mythology. I’ve always been the type who enjoys stand-alone episodes of shows like The X-Files and Angel rather than the convoluted conspiracy bits, which seem to be the main attraction in MPD. In other words, I find MPD self-consciously complicated instead of actually complex.

While there’s an awful lot to track in Eden, the narrative twists and turns feel much more purposeful. Endo weaves science, politics, crime, sex and coming-of-age together, rebuilding a dangerous but engaging world in the wake of a pandemic catastrophe.

The Closure Virus has decimated the human population. It leaves its victims as empty, crystal husks, and countries and cultures collapse in its wake. The pandemic isn’t so thorough that opportunists can’t arise to seek power over the survivors, and that’s where Eden starts. Propater, a military-industrial hybrid, is chief among the entities positioning themselves to fill corporate and command vacuums, and they’re sufficiently and persuasively sinister to the title’s 11 available volumes.

Perspective on the perilous new world is offered by Elijah, a member of the first generation to be born of survivors of the Closure Virus. His parents came of age in the rubble of a remote scientific facility that served as the failed front line in the fight against the virus, but Elijah is very much out in the world. He’s on the run. His father has become a drug lord, and his mother and sister have been kidnapped by terrorists. He’s protected by a formidable robot with just enough artificial intelligence to serve as Elijah’s philosophical sounding board as well as his bodyguard. An encounter with anti-Propater guerrillas expands Elijah’s world view substantially, and it forces him into a life of moral uncertainty peppered with terrifying bursts of violence.

Elijah is left to decide what kind of person he wants to become in world that’s singularly lacking in hopeful options. He’s a sharp observer, and he’s inquisitive, so he takes the opportunities life offers to learn about people, their beliefs and backgrounds. This gives Endo the opportunity to flesh out his perilous world in really interesting, unexpected ways, introducing his protagonist to soldiers, criminals, cops, freedom fighters, scientists, prostitutes, good and bad, young and old. It’s certainly one of the most diverse casts you’re likely to encounter in a comic book, demographically and philosophically. And Endo lends a welcome dignity to just about everyone he sketches. For the most part, they’re all just doing their best to act on their principles in an unforgiving environment.

That doesn’t prompt Endo to minimize the body count, of course. Eden is an unflinchingly violent work, but the violence rarely seems gratuitous. I think that’s a difficult feat to pull off, especially when the violence is rendered with the kind of energy and specificity Endo brings to the illustrations. Gunfights and knifings and brutality of far more exotic varieties are undeniably horrible, but, at the same time, they just look so cool.

Endo doesn’t focus exclusively on Elijah. While the narrative is consistently tense, it isn’t mechanically focused. There’s a fair amount of globetrotting in play, taking breaks from Elijah’s turbulent adolescence to sketch different aspects of the post-Closure world’s coming of age. Much as I’m interested in Elijah’s trajectory, these are welcome digressions. And I will note that not all of the digressions work, as in the roughly two volumes that cast Elijah in a crisply executed but surprisingly mundane gang war, complete with corrupt cops and hookers with hearts of tarnished gold.

On the whole, though, Eden is a fascinating and challenging work. Endo builds his world with imagination and intelligence. It’s good to see that a work like this sells.

Why people are reviewing this item as Superman: The Journey and Superman: Sacrifice, I have no idea, but Superman: Ruin Revealed is a good read, and worth reviewing in its own right as well.

300
