Flash fights a rogue’s gallery of his arch enemies alongside Batman and Orion (”Flash and Substance”), Luthor switches brains with the Flash in “The Great Brain Robbery” (inside joke: Michael Rosenbaum is the voice of Flash, but plays Lex Luthor in the series Smallville) , and Luthor’s and Grodd’s struggle for dominance of the Legion of Doom comes to a head in the final two-parter, which leads to an unlikely partnership against the ultimate supervillain. The series also dips into other characters and realms of DC comic-book lore, such as the Legion of Super-Heroes (”Far from Home”), Deadman (”Dead Reckoning”), the Seven Soldiers of Victory (”Patriot Act”), Birds of Prey (”Grudge Match”), and Mike Grell’s Warlord (”Chaos at the Earth’s Core”). In the bonus features, the series creators discuss JLU’s ongoing Cadmus story line, there’s a music-only track of the series’ final episode, and the creators do a 30-minute on-screen commentary talking about three late-season episodes. –David Horiuchi

Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker (The Original Uncut Version)
Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early ’90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protg’s activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the “tortured hero” mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported “kids’ show” has dared to attempt. (Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.) Once again, Warner Brothers’ cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. –Bruce Reid

This is a very young person’s book, or at least a book purposefully written in a very young voice. As you might expect, this means an overly sentimental plot, a lot of achingly self-conscious moments of drama, and characters that make you want to enter into the universe of the story and spend several days punching each one in the face. There are basic craft shortcomings. Layouts are hard to follow. The writing doesn’t differentiate between characters strongly enough; it feels like one voice instead of many. Supporting characters in particular don’t rise above the level of “types.” The art varies wildly in terms of its visual impact and feels slightly off-model throughout, as if the cartoonist either couldn’t maintain the same stylizations of figures and especially faces from page to page or hadn’t quite settled on the artistic effect he desired from those designs before plunging into his narrative. Apparently a self-published, self-distributed comic based on the author’s Internet work, there’s nothing about the project’s execution that makes you think this should be made available in any form other than the ones in which it already appears.
Buffalo Roots offers up a few promising elements, however, enough of them that I want to read the cartoonist’s next book — or maybe three books from now. John Cei Douglas flatters his general subject, a series of snapshots of a summer relationship played out across revelations from both people involved, by selecting character types that have just enough interest to hold a reader’s attention: an artist who cleaves to a place out of what might be a combination of paralysis and fear and what might simply be his finding his own level, and a young woman who likes being surrounded by artists and substituting their drive for the lack of focus in her own life, but seems perfectly happy to cop to that. In other words, they’re fairly unpleasant dopes, and Douglas refreshingly doesn’t feel the need to make them any more sympathetic than their behavior calls for. Douglas’ use of spot color and what is essentially portraiture of the female lead folded into the story as elements of visual narrative screams gimmick from the first, and continues to at least say gimmick in a very loud voice throughout. And yet some of the variations utilized are affecting, such as one scene where the female lead appears washed out in a manner that suggests her lack of commitment to the moment and the other person. It’s a range of effects that a more experienced artist might use to really drive a score of thematic elements home, and it’s something Douglas might be able to use in a future work in a way that isn’t as obvious as what we glean from its employment here. At least I hope so.

Kentucky Lawmaker Seeks By Law To Label Editorial Cartoonists as Lobbyists
Kentucky State Representative Jim Gooch is apparently pushing legislation that would re-classify journalists and editorial cartoonists as lobbyists, thus banning them from the statehouse floor. The article at E&P notes one of Gooch’s unflattering portrayals in editorial cartoon in recent months. It’s only a brief article, but the move by the Representative to drive the press from the floor of the government seems pretty clearly idiotic from the first word, and loaded with all sort of unfortunate potential outcomes, so it still does the job. Also, I had no idea there were editorial cartoonists roaming the floor of the Kentucky statehouse.

Yet the tiny nation is saved. It sounds like the plot of a preposterous fantasy novel. It is historical fact. In 481-480 B.C., King Xerxes of Persia raised forces in Asia and Africa and invaded Greece with an army so huge that it “drank rivers dry.” Then they entered the mountain pass of Thermopylae and encountered 300 determined soldiers from Sparta….
Writer-artist Frank Miller and colorist Lynn Varley retell the battle of Thermopylae in the exciting and moving graphic novel 300. They focus on King Leonidas, the young foot soldier Stelios, and the storyteller Dilios to highlight the Spartans’ awe-inspiring toughness and valor. Miller and Varley’s art is terrific, as always; the combat scenes are especially powerful. And Miller’s writing is his best in years. Read it.
Do not, however, read 300 expecting a strictly accurate history. The Phocians did not “scatter,” as Miller describes. His Spartans are mildly homophobic, which is goofy in such a gay society. Miller doesn’t say how many Greeks remained for the climactic battle–you’d think 300 Spartans and maybe a dozen others, when there were between 700 and 1,100 Greeks. Herodotus’s Histories does not identify the traitor Ephialtes as ugly and hunchbacked, or even as Spartan. 300 establishes a believable connection between Ephialtes’s affliction and behavior, but his monstrous appearance, King Xerxes’s effeminacy, and the Persians’ inexplicable pierced-GenX-African looks make for an eyebrow-raising choice of villain imagery. Nonetheless, 300 is a brilliant dramatization.

Jeff Smith on His Self-Publishing Series and The Criticism of Alt-Publishing
After my initial post about the Self-Publishing Movement of the ’90s series that Jeff Smith is doing at the Boneville blog, Jeff sent me a note about one of the points I made that I thought was worth sharing. Smith agreed to let me publish it here:”Saw the nice write-up you did on the announcement of self-publishing guest blogs over at Boneville. Thanks for picking it up.
“I want to respond to your comment about self-publishers knocking reputable houses like Fantagraphics and Drawn & Quarterly just because they were publishing houses.
“I know a lot of self-publishers were more dogmatic than me, so I don’t doubt you ran into this snarky type of thing a lot, but speaking for myself, I always thought of good, small publishers like Fantagraphics and D & Q as partners in crime… rebels advancing the cause of good and different comics.
“I’ve always maintained that there were financial advantages to self-publishing — if you could make it.
“Clearly, though, Fantagraphics and other smaller art houses led the way in terms of creator’s rights, and more often than not, I’m sure the wants and needs of the artists were put first.
“I’m just curious about the period now that we can look back at it. There has been very little written about it. I don’t think it was a mere blip. There was a huge flowering of interest in non-mainstream comics, and in trade book formats that wasn’t there before.
“SPX, the backbone of the current Indie scene grew out of a self-publishing tour. In the early days of the show, Fantagraphics didn’t even exhibit there, but the self-publishers were there. And so were the people who would shortly begin to create the boutique houses, like Jeff Mason, Chris Pitzer, and Chris Staros.
“Anyway, just wanted to say Fantagraphics is good.”The reason I wanted to publish this is because I think one of the interesting things about that period in comics was this bizarre attack by self-publisher on creators rights-supporting small publishers on what seemed like purely dogmatic grounds. What was fascinating about this kind of rigid assumption that all publishers were corrupt no matter what is that I think self-publishing as its existed in American comic books can be seen as an effective criticism of certain publishers — who unlike the best alternative comics publishers — seem to operate without providing the kind of fundamental capital and services (publicity, printing, warehousing) that one might reasonably expect of someone taking a cut of the final product.
Today’s entry in the series from Colleen Doran hints at that notion in this funny line. “I was 20-ish and had no business skills, and only one-year’s experience working as an unpaid gopher in a trade publishing house. All of which made me about as qualified to publish as anyone who had ever published my work in the small press.”

Although it’s slightly unclear if it took place in late January, early February or even a year ago, Gianfranco Goria at afNews informs that the cartoonist turned successful Italian cinema screenwriter Vittorio Vighi passed away. This piece notes that Vighi was a cartoonist for the satirical newspaper Marc’Aurelio in the early 1950s, but then moved full time into film when the newspaper closed. That same article also mentions cartoons done under the name “Cip e Ciop” for Topolino in the early 1960s, and contains some really cool cartoon art cited as being done in his retirement.
