Justice League Unlimited - Season Two (DC Comics Classic Collection) (x man comic book wallpaper)

Justice League Unlimited - Season Two (DC Comics Classic Collection)
Justice League Unlimited - Season Two (DC Comics Classic Collection)
In the final 13 episodes of Justice League Unlimited, Grodd recruits Lex Luthor, Sinestro, Bizarro, Giganta, and hordes of other villains to form the Legion of Doom, leading to numerous action-packed episodes of villains fighting the superheroes of the expanded JLU. The core members of the original series–Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Flash, and Green Lantern–are supplemented by such heroes as Green Arrow, Black Canary, Supergirl, Red Tornado, and Mister Terrific. But even waves of super-beings would be a bore if the stories weren’t compelling and well-thought-out, and dashed with humor. It’s the respect for the viewer’s intelligence that elevates JLU beyond a kids’ series to arguably the best animated-superhero show ever.

During the season, Hawkgirl meets Katar Hol, Hawkman, who claims that he and Hawkgirl are the resurrection of centuries-ago lovers, which throws a wrench into her developing relationship with Green Lantern (”Shadow of the Hawk,” “Ancient History”). Flash fights a rogue’s gallery of his arch enemies alongside Batman and Orion (”Flash and Substance”), Luthor switches brains with the Flash in “The Great Brain Robbery” (inside joke: Michael Rosenbaum is the voice of Flash, but plays Lex Luthor in the series Smallville) , and Luthor’s and Grodd’s struggle for dominance of the Legion of Doom comes to a head in the final two-parter, which leads to an unlikely partnership against the ultimate supervillain. The series also dips into other characters and realms of DC comic-book lore, such as the Legion of Super-Heroes (”Far from Home”), Deadman (”Dead Reckoning”), the Seven Soldiers of Victory (”Patriot Act”), Birds of Prey (”Grudge Match”), and Mike Grell’s Warlord (”Chaos at the Earth’s Core”). In the bonus features, the series creators discuss JLU’s ongoing Cadmus story line, there’s a music-only track of the series’ final episode, and the creators do a 30-minute on-screen commentary talking about three late-season episodes. –David Horiuchi

CR Sunday Interview: Steven Weissman
*****

As we talk about in the following interview, like most everyone else I came to Steve Weissman a bit late, near the tail end of the early, idiosyncratic work that now collected makes up the bulk of the new collection Mean. He was one of those cartoonists you had to read to truly appreciate, despite his having a lovely and eye-catch design sense and style. An under-appreciated writer, he’s one of the few cartoonists I know of where other cartoonists will quote random turns of phrase for no particular reason. His idiosyncratic character types, from Li’l Bloody to Sweet Chubby Cheeks, are so perfectly realized you almost feel like they’re ideas you came up with first but never found the time to put to paper. Weissman has quietly become one of Fantagraphics’ most dependable cartoonists, and as he’s an unfailingly polite and entertaining guy as well, the cartoonist has also become one of that company’s best ambassadors. I could talk to Steve Weissman once a week, although I get the sense he’d find talking about himself every seven days to be something of a chore.

*****

TOM SPURGEON: Steve, I don’t know that much about you, other than I’m pretty sure you live somewhere between Seattle and Tijuana and I believe you have a family. Do you have a day job? How much time are you able to give to your comics?

STEVEN WEISSMAN: You seem to know me pretty well. Ribs Weissman: unemployed drifter who may or may not have a family stashed somewhere. Does he even draw comics anymore? The ones in Mean look pretty old

SPURGEON: One of the things that Jaime mentions in his introduction that I think was true for a lot of people that got into your stuff early on is that you just sort of showed up. How did you end up getting into comics all those years ago? You hit the ground running.

WEISSMAN: Thank you. Isn’t Jaime Hernandez wonderful?

SPURGEON: Can you talk about how your art style developed? You have a unique approach that is reminiscent of kids comics without being entirely like them. Are there influences — Hal Roach, maybe? How did you settle on that kind of comic as opposed to all the other kinds you could have done?

WEISSMAN: Do you remember “Super Deforming?” Before I saw my first example, in 1992, I really thought “cute” stuff was fake and gross. But this Super Deformed Ultraman, it was so well designed, so well thought out, I began to think about “cute” all the time. What makes a drawing cute? When is it too cute? Why should I hate an unsuccessful attempt at “cute” so much more than an unsuccessful attempt at objectivity? I liked how “Super Deforming” simultaneously mocked and embraced cuteness. It was, somehow, different than “Muppet Babies.” So, I wanted to draw something “cute.”

Of course, I knew that drawing a decent Charlie Brown or Broom Hilda was much harder than most people think. Up to this point, though, I didn’t figure it was worth the effort. Since I’d recently been to art-school, I assumed I could get a handle on “cuteness” pretty easily. That it was still so difficult for me to create an honestly cute piece of art, without resorting to cheap tricks like “mugging” or “sincere eyes,”* was completely humiliating and led me to a renewed appreciation for my childhood idol Charles Schulz. This was a pretty big deal.

And, yes, I absolutely adore Hal Roach’s Our Gang shorts. The same goes for Shirley Temple movies, Abbott and Costello, and so much of the TV I grew up watching on Sunday mornings.

*I hated how cute art relied on BIG EYES so much that I made it a rule early on to always make my characters squint.

SPURGEON: Your cast of characters are famously classic archetypes. You’ve probably done this before, so I apologize, but can you describe you come up with the exact models used? For instance, did you characters come out of drawing, or did you sit down and think of various concepts and how you could execute them?

WEISSMAN: This goes back to my excitement about the “Super Deforming” process. Li’l Bloody (little buddy) would have been my first attempt; a deformation of a “Baron Blood” knock-off I used to draw in sketchbooks shared with my teenaged hoodlum friends. I got such a kick out of him right away, I set about creating a “supporting cast.” Using a “Frankenstein’s Monster” as a best friend for “Dracula” was an obvious choice (as was a “Zombie” sidekick/brother).

From there, though, I let my mind wander. Western heroes like “The Lone Ranger” for the Li’l Tin-Stars (Little Twin Stars), Greek mythology for Kid Medusa (Chrysaor) and, of course, old comic-book ads (X-Ray Spence). I recall trying out “mummies” and werewolves in my sketchbooks, but they were pretty lame so I didn’t force it (I did give the kids a dead dog, though, with Elzie Crisler Segar).

“Sweet” Chubby Cheeks (or “Sweet Chubby” Cheeks) worked as a Jekyll/Hyde character, as well as an illustration of the kind of “aw” cutesy that I didn’t like. Have you seen the later “Our Gang” comedies, with George McFarland continuing to play “Spanky” when he was 12 yrs. old? I wanted Chubby to be like that. Adults would think he was still cute, but other kids would know better. That idea wore me out for some reason, but once I started modeling him on Joe Cobb, “Sweet” Chubby quickly became my favorite character in the series.

Shaver = Casper.

SPURGEON: One of the things that marked your early comics was a really smart use of color, sometimes just one or two on a page. How was it that you were one of the only alternative cartoonists to be working in color back then? That doesn’t seem typical. What were you trying to accomplish with using these really simplified color choice?

WEISSMAN: I’d done some printmaking in school, and had a friend who knew a lot about offset, so I was learning about mechanical color separation. Plus, I’d seen a few contemporary cartoonists, like Dan Clowes or Mike Allred, who had done good two-color work (which, of course, is cheaper to produce than four-color).

I don’t know why it would seem atypical, but I wanted to make books that would pop off the shelf. Color seemed like a smart way to do that.

SPURGEON: How do you feel in general about seeing your early work again? Were you happy with the way it looked? Is there an area that looking back you’re happiest that you’ve improved in?

WEISSMAN: I think the comics in Mean are pretty hilarious. They’re funny looking, the stories are all over the map, I don’t know.

I can admit that, say five years ago, I wouldn’t have seen this as a worthwhile project. This was work I had been pushing away from, you know, artistically. Now, I’m pushing off from the comics I was doing in 2002, 2003, and I think I can be more objective about these older stories. Does that make sense?

SPURGEON: Sure.

WEISSMAN: Also, I’m sure there will be readers who prefer this early work to anything I’ve produced since.

SPURGEON: Did becoming a father change the way you approached doing comics with kids in them?

WEISSMAN: It must have, but I’m not sure how.

SPURGEON: Your stories have a really unique pacing to them, Steve, in that unlike many comics I can never tell if I’m one page or 100 pages away from the story ending. They sort of unfold on their own time. How do you create your narratives? Do you script out, do you break things down visually first, how do you make a story out of your initial idea?

WEISSMAN: Thank you very much for noticing this. The middle of a story is my favorite part; where I can’t see the beginning and I don’t know how it’s going to turn out. I enjoy that feeling of being totally immersed, I believe it makes art more lifelike.

As for my writing process, it varies. Some stories can take years of just daydreaming to work out, while others seem to just flow from one exchange or scene or stunt to being a finished comic. I think the ones that take the longest to write may be those based more closely on my own experiences (”Elzie Crisler, Lost Dog” or “The Neighborhood Champs,” both from Mean). I’ve never really thought of that before.

SPURGEON: One thing that struck me about reading your stories again is that they’re stories of unsupervised children, and you really don’t have that anymore. Was the sense of just sort of bouncing around and getting into trouble or hatching plots something that you could relate to out of your childhood?

WEISSMAN: Yes, it is, but are you saying that children don’t go unsupervised anymore or that they no longer do in my comics?

SPURGEON: The first one.

WEISSMAN: I don’t think either one is true.

SPURGEON: Who do you find funny or particularly worth reading when it comes to comics?

WEISSMAN: I have to say, the most widely read comic in our house lately is called Dr. Slump.

And, of course, all the fantastic work my brilliant friends are doing.

SPURGEON: Another thing that’s striking about your work back then is how ambitious you were in terms of page design: you have pages with odd panels, pages with big panels, pages with tiny panels, pages dominated by text… Was that on purpose, were you trying to work with different approaches or is that something that just grows organically out of what you want to do on the comics page?

WEISSMAN: It’s both, of course. Although I prefer to rely on my instincts when it comes to technique or composition, I am sure I was trying harder to remain conscious of them at the time.

SPURGEON: Can you talk about how you approached the cover to Mean? I really like it, and think in general your books display an elegant sense of style. How important are those kinds of presentation and style issues to you when it comes to putting these books out?

WEISSMAN: My talents as a designer are pretty limited. I’ve been aware of this for a long old time, and have always consulted friends and worked up very simple cover designs for my books.

Nowadays, I get to work with Jacob Covey, who can make more complex ideas work so that Chewing Gum In Church and Mean are much more attractive packages than my previous efforts.

Of course, most everybody knows that Jacob and I stole the cover design for Mean from Angry Youth Comix.

SPURGEON: Do you already have a next project in mind, Steve?

WEISSMAN: CHOCOLATE CHEEKS.

1) Megaton Man
Don Simpson’s megalout is loaded with fun satirical commentary on both comics history and the Reagan 80s in which it first appeared. It’s a shame this book is largely out of print.
2) Death Ray
Sorry to do a repeat, but as an avid smoker, how can I not love a character whose powers come from nicotine?
3) The One
This early revisionist superhero was a wonderful apotheosis of burnt out hippy idealism, ascending 80s commercialism, and the budding wholesale sportfucking that the superhero genre was about to engage in after losing its innocence in the 70s.
4) Wonder Warthog
I have no idea if this holds up, but I sure loved it when I was in college. Shelton’s drawings are always a pleasure and the sheer absurdity of this character,in its visual design and in its cultural and comic art historical contexts are so retarded that they’re endearing.
5) The Roach
Maybe the most “Inside Baseball” character in comics history. Sim’s permutations on the Roach — Moon Roach, Wolverroach, Spider-Roach, normalroach, Swoon, et al. are simultaneously a fun commentary on the excesses of the Direct Market’s content from 1977 - 1997 (which I consider to be the entirety of that business cycle) and, unfortunately, the biggest stumbling block towards a casual reader of the modern era engaging fully with Cerebus in its prime. Still, if you get it, the in-jokes are still entertaining.

See above. In this case, its more of a monster-fighting adventure dressed up as superhero comics, but you gotta give Mike Mignola his props.

Steve Ditko’s greatest non-Marvel work. Currently owed by DC, of course, but so is E-Man from your list, so we’ll let it slide.
4) Marvel-man / Miracle-man
Yes, this started out as an outright clone of Captain Marvel in the early 50’s, but as (re-)interpreted by Moore, Gaiman, & Co. in the ’80s, it outgrew it’s origins and became a modern-day classic.

“Action Comics” #858 and “Batman” #670 get Variant Covers
DC Comics has added special variant covers editions to two key titles for October: ACTION COMICS #858 and BATMAN #670!

Oddball Comics: Picture Progress Vol. 1, No. 7
From the same fine folks who brought you the original CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED comes PICTURE PROGRESS, an educational funnybook that explains and explores “The Four Seasons” - and which cover-stars a tree! Thrill to the renewal of life that comes with Spring! Squeal with the pleasures of Summer! Gasp at the transforming colors of Fall! Delight at the chilly wonderment of Winter! Yep, this comic is so gosh-darn normal, it’s positively Oddball!

PICTURE PROGRESS was an educational giveaway comic that was distributed through various school systems, both public and private. Here’s a complete list of the themes for each issue of PICTURE PROGRESS published between January, 1954 and October, 1955:

Vol. 1, No. 5: “News In Review”

Vol. 1, No. 6: “The Birth Of America”

Vol. 1, No. 7: “The Four Seasons”

Vol. 1, No. 8: “Paul Revere’s Ride”

Vol. 1, No. 9: “The Hawaiian Islands”

Vol. 2, No. 1: “The Story Of Flight”

Vol. 2, No. 2: “Vote For Crazy River (The Meaning Of Elections)”

Vol. 2, No. 3: “Louis Pasteur”

Vol. 2, No. 4: “The Star Spangled Banner”

Vol. 2, No. 5: “News In Review”

Vol. 2, No. 6: “Alaska: The Great Land”

Vol. 2, No. 7: “Life In The Circus”

Vol. 2, No. 8: “The Time Of The Cave Man”

Vol. 2, No. 9: “Summer Fun”

Vol. 3, No. 1: “The Man Who Discovered America”

Vol. 3, No. 2: “The Lewis & Clark Expedition”

It’s interesting to note that, despite its rather inventive, four-way cover design, the artwork in this issue of PICTURE PROGRESS is about as blandly institutional as humanly possible, without a single word balloon or specific character. This may be due to its educational nature, but more likely, was intended to distance itself from newsstand “funnybooks” that, in 1954, were then-currently the target of psychologist Dr. Frederic (SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT) Wertham’s demonizing of comic books in general.

The title of this 24-page (plus covers) giveaway comic’s cover-story is “The Four Seasons”. It opens with this intro:

INTRODUCTORY NARRATIVE CAPTION:
All living things - human beings, animals, plants and insects - change with the changing seasons. Have you ever wondered why we have seasons?

Then, with a series of diagrams of the relative positions of Earth and sun, the cause of the four seasons is explained:

NARRATIVE CAPTION:
The seasons are caused by the way the sun shines upon the earth. The earth spins around on a make-believe line we call the axis. See how the earth leans over to one side. It takes one full day (24 hours) for the earth to spin all the way around on its axis. The sun can only shine on half the earth at one time. That is shy we have day while the other half of the earth is having night. As the earth is spinning on its axis, it is also moving all the way around the sun. It takes a whole year (365 days) to make this trip. As the earth moves around the sun, the sun shines upon it in different ways during the year. This is what causes us to have seasons. Summer is hot because we have the heat and light of the sun directly over us. It gets cooler in the autumn because our part of the earth is moving away from the direct sunlight. Winter is the coldest part of the year. That is when our part of the earth is furthest from the direct heat of the sun. In the spring, the weather gets warmer because we have moved back toward the direct sunshine. Now let us see what happens on our part of the earth during the four seasons.

The second chapter of this issue of PICTURE PROGRESS is titled “Spring Begins March 20″. We’re shown how the snow and ice melts and the ground defrosts and softens, “making it ready for nature to awaken”. As sap flows within trees and plants, blossoms begin to appear, attracting bees from their honeycomb. The bees bring back nectar to their queen, who then lays approximately 4,000 eggs, one of which will someday become the new queen. We see how beavers build dams on water-swollen rivers, and a mother chipmunk digs a series of interconnected warrens and tunnels. A pair of robins, having migrated back from a winter spent in the South, builds their next in a tree. After the mama bird lays her eggs, she and the father bird takes turns sitting on the eggs and foraging for food until their babies hatch. With the weather turning warmer, farmers plant seeds that will become their crops. Elsewhere, on a pond’s surface, a bullfrog suns himself and hunts for tiny fish, while a mother frog lays her eggs at the pond’s muddy bottom. Soon, her eggs will hatch into tadpoles. In the world of humans, life’s activities accelerate as well:

NARRATIVE CAPTION:
We have seen the beginning of spring in the country. But spring also comes to the city. The stores have new spring clothes. The baseball season starts in Washington, D.C. The President of the United States usually throws out the first ball. As the days get warmer and longer, children play outside until evening. Son the school children will begin their summer vacation.

The third chapter, “Summer Begins June 21″, starts with a montage of summertime activities — including what looks like scowling gonzo journalist Dr. Hunter S. Thompson spending a day at the beach! Meanwhile, the clutch of eggs of those robins that we met earlier have finally hatched, and their baby chicks have grown to an age when “summer school” is necessary to teach them to fly and dig for worms. Elsewhere, a hungry bear raids the bees’ honeycomb. By night, beavers train their young to gnaw down trees, while chipmunk babies evade a weasel by hiding in their underground next. In the nearby pond, the tadpoles have matured into full-grown frogs. The queen bee and her subjects abandon their honeycomb, leaving it to their industrious offspring. The next chapter, “Autumn Begins August 23″, opens with this update on farm life:

NARRATIVE CAPTION:
Our part of the earth is now leaning away from the sun. Both man and animal store food and patch up their homes for the coming winter. The farmer harvests his crops. The housewife cans food for the winter. Storm windows go up. Children go back to school.

Meanwhile, the beavers and the chipmunks prepare for winter, gathering stores of wood and nuts in their respective hiding-holes. Many birds prepare to migrate south, leaving their summer homes, although sparrows, crows and hawks remain in their nests for the rest of autumn and winter.

NARRATIVE CAPTION:
The cooler weather comes. The leaves on the trees turn red, brown and gold. They begin to fall off. Then, one windy night, the trees stand bare.

Field mice move into abandoned nests, while the bees gather together inside their honeycomb to avoid freezing to death. The chipmunks and the beavers hunker down in their nests until spring. The frogs hibernate in the mud at the bottom of their pond to keep warm beneath the frozen ice. Rabbits fur changes color to white, protective coloration to allow them to hide from their predators. The rising winds are filled with millions of seeds, destined to sprout in the spring. As “Winter Begins December 22″, this comic’s fifth and final chapter, opens, nearly all of the animals we’ve seen earlier are in hiding or in hibernation, emerging from their homes only when it’s necessary to gather food. A white rabbit is nearly killed by a hungry fox, but it manages to scamper back into its underground warren. Meanwhile, civilization adjusts to the harsher conditions:

NARRATIVE CAPTION:
Winter comes to the city, covering the gray buildings and the bare trees with a frosty, fairyland cloak. The park lakes freeze and become a winter playground. Night comes early. The street lights throw shadows on the empty sidewalks, while the people stay in their warm homes and wait for spring to come.

Also included in this issue of PICTURE PROGRESS are these features:

  • An untitled, black-and-white inside-front-cover activity page, challenging the reader to unscramble the letters of the names of six flowers and six birds.
  • “Picture Progress Quiz”, six illustrated questions relating to the contents of this comic.
  • “Things To Do”, a black-and-white, inside-back-cover activity page, with a project “for boys” (a baseball diamond game) and one “for girls” (homemade sewing cards).

  • “Do You Know That”, a back-cover feature with such educational tidbits as “The sun always shines directly on the equator, which is at the middle of the earth. That is why it is always summertime at the equator”, “It would take an airplane flying at 150 miles an hour nearly 71 years to go from the earth to the sun”, “Winter is an old German word meaning ‘time of water.’ This is because of all of the snow and rain that fall during this time of year”, and “Many, many years ago, men would look up at the stars and know when the seasons were going to change”.

ODDBALL Factoid - Although Robert Overstreet’s COMIC BOOK PRICE GUIDE lists PICTURE PROGRESS as a continuation of Gilberton’s PICTURE PARADE, according to the author of PICTURE PARADE No. 1’s “Andy’s Atomic Adventure”, it was actually a competing title!

Del Rey to Publish Novel “Heroes: Saving Charlie”
Official Press Release

NEW YORK — September 18, 2007 — Del Rey, an imprint of Ballantine Books at the Random House Publishing Group, announced plans to publish a novel based on NBC’s Emmy and Golden Globe nominated Heroes. HEROES: SAVING CHARLIE (Del Rey Hardcover; $23.95; on sale December 26, 2007) by Aury Wallington will be an original novel based on the characters Hiro Nakamura (Emmy and Golden Globe Award-nominated Masi Oka) and Charlie (Jayma Mays), created by executive producer/creator Tim Kring. It is developed through a licensing agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group.

“One of the more memorable relationships in Season One was Hiro’s first love, the waitress Charlie. We were as smitten as Hiro by that story and seized the chance to tell the full adventure of Hiro’s six months in the past. Aury Wallington was hand picked by the writers of the show for her brilliant voice for these characters. The novel is a welcome addition to the Heroes family,” said Tim Kring, creator-executive producer, “Heroes.”

The novelwritten with the full cooperation and consultation of the show’s creatorswill tell the story of Japanese office worker Hiro, who, through the use of his ability to pierce the space-time continuum and manipulate time, bravely catapults himself into the past to save Charlie, a small-town Texas waitress with an extraordinary memory, from being brutally murdered by super-powered serial killer Sylar (Zachary Quinto). While fans of the television series were given only a brief glimpse into Hiro and Charlie’s relationship as it grew into love over six time-changing months, but their history is told here with the depth and insight that only a novel will allow.

Del Rey celebrated the announcement of its Heroes book at the 2007 San Diego International Comic-Con by asking fans to help make 1,000 cranes at their booth by the end of the show. Interest was high and the goal of 1,000 was surpassed.

Season 2 of Heroes launches September 24, 2007 on NBC.

ABOUT THE SHOW

From creator/writer Tim Kring (NBC’s “Crossing Jordan”) comes the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated “Heroes,” an epic drama that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities. In its first season, “Heroes” has been honored with a People’s Choice Award, an AFI Award, a Multicultural Prism Award and this year’s TV Land Future Classic Award, as well as nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, NAACP Image Awards, WGA Awards and Satellite Awards.

The cast includes a genetics professor (Sendhil Ramamurthy, Blind Guy Driving) in India who is led by his father’s disappearance to uncover a secret theory that there are people with super powers living among us. Also featured are a young dreamer (Milo Ventimiglia, Gilmore Girls) who tries to convince his politician brother (Adrian Pasdar, Judging Amy) that he can fly. A high school cheerleader (Hayden Panettiere, Ice Princess) learns that she is totally indestructible while trying to relate to her father (Jack Coleman, Dynasty) who has a keen interest in people with special abilities. A Las Vegas single mother (Ali Larter, Final Destination) struggles to make ends meet to support her young son (Noah Gray-Cabey, My Wife & Kids) and discovers that her mirror image has a secret. In addition, a fugitive from justice (Leonard Roberts, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) continues to baffle authorities. A gifted artist (Santiago Cabrera, Empire), whose drug addiction is destroying his life and relationship with his girlfriend (Tawny Cypress, Third Watch), and whose paintings, done specifically for the show by comic book artist Tim Sale, open a visual gateway to a possible dark future. A down-on-his-luck Los Angeles beat cop (Greg Grunberg, Alias) can hear people’s thoughts, which puts him on the trail of an elusive serial killer. In Japan, a young man (Masi Oka, NBC’s Scrubs) develops a way to stop time through sheer will power.

Joining Kring as executive producer are Dennis Hammer (NBC’s Crossing Jordan), Allan Arkush (NBC’s Crossing Jordan) and Greg Beeman (Smallville). The drama is produced by Universal Media Studios in association with Tailwind Productions.

Resolved Question: if i put 20,000 down on a 250,000 house is that good or no?
i dont have much mroe to put down but im scared if i dont put more than its going to be hard to get a mortgage, my credit score is only 635 and my fiancees is worse its 580. Do we have a chance?

Resolved Question: where can i get appoved for a mortgage with bad credit?
i have a very low credit score , but need to buy a home can someon please give me advise?

One main concern I have is that readers really need to have a strong background in DC history to fully “get” what is going on with the story.

Resolved Question: What can i do?
My marriage is a tatters ive tried so hard to make things right .He is much older than me and is on pension credit.I desperatley want to go back to work but i cant.I have been to citizens advice as i need to leave but cant as the house is in my name.If i left and worked i couldnt afford a place as i would have the mortgage to deal with.My husband has got me and he knows it.He is making my life so miserable. We did split before and tried living together because of the circumstances but he made life so difficult. He is pushing me further and further away and i really think he dosent realise how he is messing my head up.
I was told i would be making myself homeless if i leave and there is no help for me unless i was pregnant. It seems so unfair that i want to work before i go crazy but the easy option is to go out and get pregnant .Whats that all about.I am actually to scared to go to a solicitor as i cant cope with things getting nasty. Its bad enough as it is.

Catch Me If You Can
Catch Me If You Can
Steven Spielberg veered from the futuristic sci-fi flirtations of A.I. and Minority Report with this brisk, stylish period take on the career of teen con-man extraordinaire Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his dogged G-man pursuer/de facto extended family member Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks). As always, the director’s musical collaborator is John Williams, and the scoring legend uses the occasion of their 20th collaboration as a rewarding musical journey back to the days when he was known as Johnny Williams, ambitious young pianist for Henry Mancini on such early jazz scores as Peter Gunn. Informed by a half-century of subsequent achievement, Williams’s return to the jazz idiom of his youth yields a smart, nervous score that evokes more than mere nostalgia. But with Dan Higgins’s moody sax often leading the way, the veteran composer’s work here seems more evocative reinvention than revisitation, yet another tribute to his uncanny ability to make any idiom his own. A handful of pop standards (including Sinatra’s “Come Fly with Me,” Getz and Gilberto’s “Girl from Ipanema,” “The Christmas Song” by Nat “King” Cole) deftly color both period and plot, but, as always, it’s Williams who provides Spielberg’s masterful imagery with its musical life’s blood. –Jerry McCulley

Buying refurbished cartridges from a refiller presents a risk in that the purchaser ink-refill no idea how many times, or, how carefully that cartridge has been refilled.

Many people, therefore, use compatible ink cartridges those made by a company other than the printer manufacturer that give comparable quality, but with considerable savings. ink-refill start, you may want to look over various kinds of inkjet printer accessories. Not Comics: Google To Run AP Content
It’s more a gut feeling than something I could diagram on a chalkboard, but Google’s assumption of Associated Press content feels like one of those important cogs falling into place as the landscape surrounding newspapers and their on-line iterations slowly transforms.

Arnold Wagner, RIP
Daily Cartoonist reports that the Salem, Oregon-based cartoonist and writer about comics Arnold Wagner passed away last week after a recurrence of cancer. Wagner was perhaps best known as a co-author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Cartooning and as a co-founder of the 1960 magazine The PRO Cartoonist & Gagwriter. He was also an active presence in many cartooning communities, and kept an eclectic comics-related blog. According to a biographical post excerpted here, Wagner worked mostly in “gag cartooning, advertising and illustration.”

I will supplement this post with better information as I’m able to discover it.

Go, Read: Second Banned Opus Comic
Maybe I’m not looking at it the right way this morning, but all I can think is that this has to be the most innocuous, goofiest thing ever banned as potentially dangerous speech in the history of things being banned as potentially dangerous speech. It’s also almost impossible to detect anything in the way of the underlying creative urgency that’s usually behind something that gets banned. If you’d like to pick “right now” as the time to start rooting against print newspapers and everything having to do with them, I’m not going to argue with you.

ICv2.com: Annual Paul Levitz Interview
ICv2.com talks with DC President and Publisher Paul Levitz at San Diego, which I believe is a tradition at the comics business news and analysis site. A sustained interview like this one can always be considered a must-read for industry wonks.

Part One
Part Two
Part Three
Part Four

There’s not a lot that jumps out at me as being worth talking about, really. By Levitz’ own admissions, he’s engaged with projects very early on in their development, which gives him a kind of broad view of things — not a lot of grit and detail in his descriptions of DC’s various efforts. He makes a philosophical point about Zuda where he offers up that a publisher justifies itself by providing value to the creation that the creator can’t, which I think is fine, but I also think invites some really strict analysis of what happens with those comics in terms of how the creators are treated and how successful they are in relation to successful self-publishers of webcomics.

There are a couple of vague points that gained my attention, kind of related. I always find it odd whenever anyone at the Big Two contrasts the opportunities for selling through comics shops with the opportunities provided other retail outlets as if they didn’t have a gigantic hand in shaping the kind of market comics shops have and pursue and maintain. I also find it weird when mainstream publishers talk about the breadth of the field and what’s possible now, when their resources made such changes possible a long time ago, they just chose not to pursue those things in sustained fashion. So I guess in general there’s something about re-casting the profit motive into a structural impediment that irks me a bit.

If you want to read a good Superman story read anything Dan Jurgen wrote afterwards. Read the entire saga of the death and return of Superman. Sure it was over hyped and just a retarded way to boost sales and boy did it work but the writers still did th

Remanufactured Inkjet Cartridges Most ink cartridge manufacturers make these print heads robust enough to last longer than the life of ink-cartridges ink in the printer cartridge which means that when the ink is all used up the inkjet cartridge is still a usable and workable device and can be reloaded with ink, or reinked and certain components replaced.

We have printer ink refills for the cartridges which do not have a compatible ink-cartridges cartridge alternative, this is mainly where the original ink cartridge has a print head as part of the cartridge.

(The strangers and comic books) Various Friday News Story Updates

Various Friday News Story Updates
* Reporters Sans Frontieres continues to monitor political reaction to the Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda running the Lars Vilks cartoon of Muhammed with the body of a dog. Pakistan followed Iran in summoning a Swedish diplomat to receive their official protest, while the Organization of the Islamic Conference called for the cartoonist and editor to be punished.

* The banned Opus story heads into its second of two weekends where one eighth of the strip’s client base decided not to run a pair of cartoons having a go at Islamic themes and humor. Editorials like these I think show just how confused the issues have become, and how easily they’re manipulated to make a weak political point about biased media or to assert the general superiority of a certain culture. I mean, after you’ve vomited the notion up on the table that something about the confused reaction to the 2006 Danish Cartoons Controversy somehow means that nobody should ever do cartoons about Christians, either, do you go anywhere with that, or are you just making a strident point for the sake of making a strident point?

* The Chicago Reader follows up on some of their media beat coverage of the story with a full profile of Scott Nychay, the cartoonist whose paper entered him in contests and used the results for publicity after laying off the cartoonist.

The CR Misinformation Department
* When I wrote that Mark Evanier’s sure to be excellent, forthcoming biography on Jack Kirby, Kirby: King of Comics was such a major event as to make it the only book of its type this Fall worth considering, I clearly was harboring some sort of odd resentment against Charles Schulz biographer David Michaelis, whose equally anticipated Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography will also debut in the weeks ahead. Peanuts guru Nat Gertler has an early review. One thing I want to see is if Schulz’s marital drama will be the centerpiece of how the book is presented through the press, and if so, how that notion will be tied back into his work or the progression of his career. Or if it will be.

* a couple of people wrote in to tell me to hold my horses when it comes to suggesting that DC delaying a bunch of Showcase editions featuring work from the company’s more eclectic portions of its catalog reflects a winnowing of that reprint line in a way that would favor their bigger licenses. Turns out that the material in question are later books where different rights situations apply, and DC needs extra time to clear the rights before they can publish that material. Although there’s a truism applicable to comics that says a book that doesn’t get published still has a chance of not being published, the explanation sounds fair to me and I look forward to more of the odder Showcase books hitting the stands at a later date.
