Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early ’90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protg’s activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the “tortured hero” mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported “kids’ show” has dared to attempt. (Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.) Once again, Warner Brothers’ cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. –Bruce Reid

In Case You Like Me Were Wondering About One Piece Sales Vs. Asterix
This article at the French-language comics news clearinghouse ActuaBD.com suggests that the performance of current world comics sales champion One Piece does indeed surpass the initial sales and initial printing figures enjoyed by the highest-selling Asterix albums. I’m not sure that it answers total sales over years and years and years — but the initial rush to sales seems to clearly fall to the manga. If I’m reading the figures correctly, the latest volume in the Eiichiro Oda pirate series sold 1.8 million copies of its 3 million-plus print run in a single week just past. I’m not sure what to make of these huge-sellers, although if either of these were a North American phenomenon we’d be flipping out about them.

Three Industry Issues To Launch CCI
With Comic-Con International getting its start tonight via the show’s “Preview Night” festivities, there are a few stories worth noting in terms of general industry issues going into the calendar-defining show.
* it’s been a crazy-enough week that I probably already linked to this in one of the Random News posts — in fact, I’m sure of it — but Johanna Draper Carlson’s round-up of commentary and posts on the possibility of moving New Comics Day back a day or so for various reasons (more time to stock shelves, better coordination with video and book markets) is worth a review.
* Brian Hibbs attended a DC-run meeting with Direct Market retailers on their digital initiatives. I don’t follow much of his analysis and don’t agree with many of his proclamations, but it’s an intriguing article from the standpoint of putting Hibbs’ view out there.
* there’s a just-out-of-the-spotlight discussion among retailers through ICv2.com on the issue of DC going ahead and throwing in with the $3.99 price point. I’d suggest that an equally important part of this story is that DC with its new leadership followed a very old pattern of letting Marvel stake out a business decision within the market and then eventually capitulating to the direction Marvel chooses. This would be a decent strategy if it somehow shielded DC from criticism, but it seemingly doesn’t.

BBQ Buffet: * Char grilled sausages with tomato chutney * Char grilled corn cobs * Garden salad with pesto soy and balsamic dressing * Tofu and vegetable skewers * Roasted red onion, potato, garlic and rosemary salad * Char grilled asparagus Ingredients: Soy sausages (from the health food section of your supermarket), Tomato chutney (from supermarket), 4 whole corn cobs, 200gms mixed lettuce, cucumber, 3 tomatoes, 30g pitted olives, 250mls Soy milk, 3 tbsp basil pesto (from supermarket), 100ml balsamic vinegar, red onion, 1 Lemon cut into wedges, 1.5 kg washed potatoes, 2 red onions, 1 bunch rosemary, 6 cloves of garlic, 1 red capsicum, 1 zucchini, 250g firm tofu, 4 large field mushrooms, 1 tbsp crushed garlic, cup olive oil. Method: Wash and dice potatoes into large cubes, peel garlic cloves, chop red onions into large chunks and remove rosemary from the thick stalks. In a roasting tray combine the potatoes, garlic, onion, rosemary, salt and enough olive oil to coat the potatoes. Place in a pre heated oven of 200 C and cook for about 1 hours until golden brown, tossing potatoes every 20 mins. The first comic hero that this company created was the Human Torch. It was a runaway hit.The first patriotically themed superhero was Captain America. He did just as well as the Torch, if not better.

Marvel comics, based in New York, has continued to grow and be a successful company but they have still faced some difficulties. That does not mean that they have not faced their share of challenges. Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker (The Original Uncut Version)
Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early ’90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protg’s activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the “tortured hero” mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported “kids’ show” has dared to attempt. (Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.) Once again, Warner Brothers’ cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. –Bruce Reid
